Whispers of the Sea

Whispers of the Sea is a typeface design inspired by my deep connection to the ocean. Growing up in Qingdao, a coastal city, I’ve always felt at home by the sea. Moving to Melbourne, I found comfort in its shores, as if the waves were whispering stories from afar. This project explores the rhythm and fluidity of the sea through letterforms, extracting shapes from waves to create a typeface that captures their movement and emotion. It’s a way of decoding the ocean’s language—a visual tribute to its eternal whispers and the memories it carries.

EXTRACT
FONTS
FROM THE WAVES

Looking for fonts
that inspired by the photos
and videos I took of
the sea.

ANIMATED
TYPEFACE

The typeface I designed aims to
mimic the perpetual ebb and flow
of ocean waves, capturing their eternal
motion. So I took static pictures
of the wave from the video and
traced the movement of the wave through
the change of the letters. I use GIFs
to show the fluctuation of letters.

CHANGEABLE
LETTERS

The waves are constantly moving forward and backward, changing shape. So I have an idea whether the fonts I design can also reflect this change. At first, I tried to convert the letter A to R (the two letters are similar so the transition is easy). After this try, I finally plotted the changes of all 26 letters, from A to Z.

SHELLS
PUNCTUATION

On the beach, there are many kinds of shells, strange shapes, textures. Beautiful and unique shells along the seaside, I drew them down and slightly deformed, combined. They can be used as punctuation marks.
